Toledo, OH – Well, no one said it would be easy….after a pair of solid wins last weekend against RMU, the Toledo Rockets came up against a much tougher opponent in the University of Dayton Flyers this past weekend. Untimely penalties and too many mental mistakes gave the Rockets their first two losses of the season.
Friday night, the Flyers were able to hold off a late rally by the Rockets, managing to escape Tam O’Shanter with a 5-4 win in the Rocket’s home opener. Picking up two points on the night were Sven Weisser and Ryan Sell (1 G, 1 A each) along with Nate Connolly who added two helpers. The Rockets also picked up goals from Scott Girardi and Justin Saunders.
Saturday night, the Rockets faired no better as a sluggish start and a 5 minute major, allowed the Flyers to jump out to an 8-2 lead before the Rockets managed to find their game. One of the lone bright spots of the game was David Rieckhoff’s play in net. Entering the game during the second period in relieve of Craig Trego, Rieckhoff played much better than in his first college appearance at RMU. Coming up with goals for the Rockets again were Girardi, Sell, and Weisser along with Jordan Szpak who notched his first of the season.
Toledo looks to return to its winning ways this coming weekend as they welcome both Indiana University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University to the Tam O’Shanter Sports Complex. Friday’s game against IUP gets started at 8:30 pm. Saturday’s game will be Kid’s Night with the game set to start at 4:30 pm. All children ages 14 and younger will be given $1 admission to the game as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. There will also be a series of events off the ice and around the rink for kids and other fans alike. Tickets are $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adults. SEE YOU AT THE RINK!!!
